"It was wrong" - Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher Exhibit

Description

"It was wrong" was Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher's explanation for choosing to challenge racial discrimination in higher education. Tn 1946, she applied to the University of Oklahoma School of Law and was denied admission on racial grounds. She challenged the decision through the court system, and in 1948 the U.S. Supreme Court found that Fisher was "entitled to secure legal education afforded by a state institution:' In response to the court ruling, state leaders initially created Langston Law School for black students instead of admitting them to OU Law. After an additional legal battle, Ms . .Fisher was admitted to OU Law in 1949. She attended classes in this building, Monnet Hall, where she endured humiliating segregation hut triumphed as a law graduate in 1951.

While some at the "University of Oklahoma and in the state fought to block her admission, other students, organizations, and publications like The Black Dispatch offered support during trying times.

An attorney, Fisher later became a professor at Langston University. In 1992, her relationship with the University of Oklahoma came full circle when Governor David Walters appointed her to the OU Board of Regents. ln 1995, she died in Oklahoma City at the age of 71.

Her vision of a better, more equitable world and her courage to endure hardship on behalf of social justice are an inspiration to us all.
